What Is Invisalign and How Does It Work?

Invisalign is a highly reputable brand that is known by virtually every orthodontic office.  It is a tooth alignment system that is virtually invisible, with a format that is very similar to teeth whitening trays. It gives the wearer the ability to fix misalignments in the teeth without feeling socially awkward.  Each tray is made specifically for the mouth of the patient in order to move the teeth in the pattern that is pre-determined by the orthodontic office. The trays are made of a proprietary thermoplastic material that is unique to the company and the brand. This material has been thoroughly tested for safety and is perfectly fine to use in all orthodontic treatment plans. People all over the world are talking about this…

How do the aligners actually work to straighten the teeth?

Over the course of the treatment, a patient will be given a series of aligners, each with an adjustment position that is closer to the ideal position as determined by your orthodontist. Each alignment tray will make a slight adjustment to the teeth, creating a minimum of discomfort. Patients switch alignment trays approximately every two weeks barring any unforeseen emergency.

The special trays that are designed by the company move the teeth through a controlled force. Not only do the specially made trays control the amount of force that used to move the teeth, but they also control the timing of that force. In order to maintain your comfort level as well as the health of your teeth, only a few teeth will move at any one time. Your doctor will be able to map out the specifics, and you will be able to see exactly how your alignment will take place if you so choose.

What are the benefits of Invisalign?

The first benefit is the most obvious: You will look and feel your absolute best. If you are having that nagging feeling that your smile is keeping you back in your professional or your social life, then this is the program for you. You will be able to fix all of the problems that you have without any headgear or uncomfortable process.

The alignment trays that you will be using are virtually invisible, going unnoticed unless you specifically give attention to them. They will fit seamlessly into your lifestyle. You have the ability to remove the alignment trays at any time, so eating and drinking whatever you want will never be a problem with this system.

You will also be able to brush and floss normally. In many cases, traditional braces actually lead to tooth decay because of the extra hardware that makes it more difficult to reach vulnerable parts of the tooth and gums. The pain of those systems can also make brushing and flossing very uncomfortable. There is none of this discomfort with the Invisalign system.

The metal brackets of braces can also cause infections in some people. In this system, there are no wires that can cut your gums or irritate your teeth, lowering the chance of infection. You will also spend much less time in the office of your orthodontist. There are no difficult wires to fiddle with, only a new alignment tray to give to you every so often.

You will also be improving the health of your teeth. In many cases, teeth that are not aligned correctly can make it almost impossible to clean the mouth thoroughly. By straightening the teeth, you are making the job of your dentist as well as your toothbrush much easier.

What can I expect with Invisalign?

Although all treatment plans are different based on where you are starting from, the average program lasts around 12 months for adults. Teens may take a bit longer because of the growing body. Your alignment trays will work best if you leave them in at all times that you are not eating or cleaning your teeth. However, you do have the freedom to take them out whenever you choose.  You will need to see your orthodontist every four to six weeks. This is the preferred time in order to make sure that everything is going according to schedule.
