In 2021, we changed our practice name from Nease & Higginbotham Orthodontics to Nth Degree Orthodontics. We made this change to reflect the addition of Dr. Alex Thomas to our practice, as well as our merger with Dr. Horvath and Live Laugh Smiles Orthodontics. The “N” is for Nease, the “T” is for Thomas, and the “H” is for Higginbotham and Horvath. So, we’re now NTH Degree Orthodontics! Get it?!?!
As we gained two new exceptional orthodontists, along with two new convenient locations in Union and West Spartanburg, we wanted our practice name and mission to speak to our newly evolved practice.
“Nth Degree Orthodontics” represents our collective commitment to providing the highest quality orthodontic care with the same personalized, small-town approach we’ve always been known for.
Our orthodontists near Spartanburg and the Upstate of SC are under a different name, but still provide the same exceptional quality of care!

#1: We’re not a chain – we’re still privately owned!
We have 5 locations in the Upstate of South Carolina, but we’re still privately owned. When Nease & Higginbotham Orthodontics merged with Live Laugh Smile Orthodontics, we didn’t change the very quality that makes us so different from other practices – our small-town, personalized service.
Nth Degree Orthodontics is not corporate, nor commercial. We’re the same family orthodontic practice that has been trusted in the community for over 50 years. We don’t plan to become a corporate/commercial practice, because that wouldn’t be true to who we are. You’ll see the same doctors every time you come for an appointment, because our doctors are the practice owners!
We’re on a first name basis with our patients and we genuinely care about each patient’s life! We want your visit to our office to be the best part of your day – every time.

#3: Our orthodontists are well-known in the community and across the nation.
Our very own orthodontist, Dr. Thomas, has made history! In 2020, she was selected as the youngest member of the AAO (American Association of Orthodontists) Board of Trustees. She’s also one of only three women who have served on the Board since the organization’s inception in 1900. When her tenure there ends in May 2022, she will begin serving on the AAO’s Council on Communications.
Dr. Nease is a member of many professional orthodontic and dental organizations, including the American Association of Orthodontists and the American Dental Association. He has served as President of the Spartanburg County Dental Association, the Piedmont District (SC) Dental Society, the South Carolina Association of Orthodontists, and the American Association of Orthodontists Foundation. In 2025, he will become the President of the Southern Association of Orthodontists.
Dr. Higginbotham has been practicing orthodontics in Spartanburg for 50 years, and Dr. Horvath has been an orthodontist in Spartanburg for over 30 years! Dr. Higginbotham was one of the founding members of the Schulman Study Group, of which our practice is still a member today.
All 4 of our orthodontists are heavily involved with our local dental community, especially with Healthy Smiles of Spartanburg, a local non-profit organization that provides free dental care to children who fall between the cracks of private dental insurance and Medicaid.
