Can You Still Maintain a Healthy Diet While Wearing Invisalign?

UPDATED 29-9-18

Whether your teeth are crooked or the orthodontist has expressed concerns about your kids’ teeth, it’s time to make some decisions about orthodontic care for your family. Most people opt for the traditional braces, which are small metal brackets on the teeth; these brackets are connected with a wire. Some adults and teenagers choose clear aligners as their orthodontic appliance of choice.  The best known clear aligner brand is Invisalign.

Understanding Clear Aligners (Invisalign)

Before you can begin to ask specific questions about Invisalign, you should understand how clear aligners work. Invisalign trays are almost invisible. This is a different appliance from braces that go behind the teeth.  Many people choose clear aligners because of their subtle appearance. However, depending on the severity of your teeth problems, clear aligners may not be the best treatment modality for you. Individuals should consult with their orthodontist to discover if they are candidates for Invisalign.

Orthodontic Treatment and Food Restrictions

Any type of orthodontic treatment comes with dietary restrictions. Traditional braces have more restrictions than clear aligners.  In general, hard, sticky, and chewy foods must be avoided while wearing braces.  Soft drinks and sports drinks can also cause enamel erosion while wearing braces.  However, since clear aligners can be removed for eating and drinking, these same restrictions do not apply to them. Still, excellent oral hygiene is paramount when wearing both braces and clear aligners.  If the teeth are not properly cleaned before placing clear aligners over your teeth, food and bacteria can interact to cause cavities underneath the trays.

Talk to Your Orthodontic Professional

If you have questions about what you can and cannot eat while wearing orthodontic appliances, seek advice from your orthodontic professional. Every situation and patient are different, so make sure you are doing what is right for you instead of just assuming that all individuals are the same. Set up a time to speak with the professional about the foods to avoid while wearing Invisalign or braces.

Healthy Diet, Healthy Teeth

A healthy diet is key to promoting healthy teeth.  A healthy weight, low cholesterol, and proper levels of blood sugar are always at the forefront of our health thoughts.  Yet you also need to consider what is healthy for your teeth. For example, eating foods with a lot of sugar is not a good idea. Furthermore, if you drink lots of soft drinks, you should consider cutting back. As with anything, moderation in your diet will help maintain your health as well.  Although not a food or beverage, cigarettes are another product that can cause damage to your teeth and gums.  See your dental professional for help in quitting.  You should also eat foods that are right for your body. Think about adding more fruits, vegetables and lean meats into your diet. Eating enough of these foods helps promote overall health.  Best of all, these healthy foods can be enjoyed while wearing both  braces and Invisalign.

Check With Your Doctor

You should also speak to your doctor to find out about any conditions you have that could preclude you from eating certain foods. By talking to your doctor, you can also learn safe ways to attain your ideal weight and to slim down your body for a healthier you. Even when wearing braces and Invisalign, you can still work to get the rest of your body in shape as well.

The Short Answer

You originally asked if you can maintain a healthy diet while you are wearing Invisalign. The short answer is yes, you can. Absolutely no reason exists why you would not have the ability to maintain a healthy diet. Invisalign allows you to eat most foods, especially healthy ones. Even if you choose traditional braces, the foods that you can’t eat or shouldn’t eat are usually ones that aren’t the best for your body anyway!

Now you know that you do not have to give up your bid to get healthy just because you are aligning your teeth. On top of that, you can use this time to focus on the health of not only your teeth, but also your entire body for a fresh start.
