Keeping Your Teeth White with Braces

When you start treatment with Damon® Clear braces, you’re choosing one of the most advanced, premium treatments available! Not only do Damon Clear braces work up to six months faster than traditional types of braces, but they’re virtually-undetectable too!

If you’re currently in orthodontic treatment, or you’re ready to schedule your complimentary exam to redefine your confidence and improve your quality of life with orthodontic treatment, we have some tips to help prevent yellow or stained teeth! Keeping your teeth white while having braces doesn’t have to be difficult.

Top 3 Tips for Keeping Teeth White with Braces

1. Brush and floss your teeth regularly!
Plaque and bacteria will become your enemies very quickly if you don’t clean your teeth regularly. It’s important that you’re dedicated to brushing your teeth two to three times a day to keep your brackets debris-free. Did you know your mouth can be home to over 700 different species of bacteria at once?! Flossing is also a must! Flossing regularly will help to prevent gum disease, so you can maximize your results and achieve the smile you’ve always desired!

Pro tip: Consider carrying a small travel toothbrush to brush your teeth after each meal. This will help to keep stains away! Try using an interproximal orthodontics brush to clean the hard-to-reach spaces between brackets and wires.

2. Avoid foods and drinks that may stain your teeth!
To decrease the chances of tooth stains, adjust your diet by opting for foods that don’t have strong dyes. (Try to avoid foods with strong dyes, like beets and blueberries.) Some beverages, like red wine and sodas, can erode your enamel and increase the chances of staining your teeth yellow by revealing the dentin (the layer of tooth material underneath the enamel).

Our orthodontists are dedicated to educating our patients and providing you with the most useful oral hygiene information to guide you through your treatment! Check out this list of the food options you should keep an eye on while undergoing your orthodontics treatment. On the other hand, here are some other tasty food options you can consider:

  • Eggplant
  • Bananas
  • Mango
  • Yogurt
  • Fish

3. Visit your orthodontist and dentist as recommended.
Throughout your orthodontic treatment, you still need to visit your dentist every 6 months for regular cleanings.

At your dental cleanings, your dentist will clean the tartar and plaque from your teeth and around your gum line to prevent bacteria buildup. Don’t miss these appointments! They’ll help to prevent teeth staining throughout your treatment.

At your orthodontic appointments with us, we will adjust your braces and monitor your progress to ensure that your teeth are on the right track! Between your regular orthodontic appointments (every 8 to 10 weeks, depending on your personalized treatment plan) and your regular dental cleanings, we work alongside your dentist to keep your teeth clean, healthy and strong!
